We’re jumping for joy around here… Our busiest wedding season yet is just around the corner and we can’t wait to see all the awesome couples that have chosen us to capture their special day. But, before we get to the weddings, let’s talk about engagement photos. We love this part because it’s a chance for us to get to know our couples, have a little fun and capture some great images of them in a relaxed atmosphere. Here are some tips to read when preparing for perfect engagement photos.

We hear the same questions and concerns from couples prior to almost every engagement session… What do we wear, what do we bring, what about hair & makeup, and even “we’re afraid we’ll ruin our pictures”. Let’s touch on all of those areas and more.

 What will it be like?

We think engagement sessions should be fun. Who doesn’t like to have fun? It’s not a test that you pass or fail. It’s about all of us getting to know each other, having a few laughs and capturing some great moments of your time spent together as a couple. You’ll do some walking, hugging, maybe a little kissing. You get the idea. Nothing you don’t do pretty much every day. Your part is to enjoy yourself, our part is to make you look like celebrities.

What do we wear?

You don’t have to go on a shopping spree (although it might be a good excuse). We suggest wearing something that’s appropriate for the location(s) we plan to go to. A sundress and sandals for the beach, a dress and heels for the city work well. For the guys, a nice collared shirt and long pants, a sport coat for the city. A sharp dressed guy can bring the whole look together. We suggest you bring your style and personality to it. Don’t be “matchy” and be sure to stay clear of bright neon colors, big prints, bold plaids or colors that clash. We also suggest that you each bring another outfit so you’ll have two different looks.

 What about hair + makeup?

Depending on the location + style of engagement photos you’re going for, you might want to have your hair + makeup done professionally. It might even be a good opportunity to do a “trial” for your wedding day. You might want to pamper yourself and get a manicure. We might just take a picture of the bling on your hand.

Where will we go?

There are a lot of favorite spots we like to shoot at, nature inspired, urban and artsy/colorful. We’ll get great images no matter where we shoot. We suggest a location that reflects you and your relationship. Favorite places like the beach, where you first met, where you got engaged… We’ve even gone to a baseball stadium because that’s where the couple first met. If you met in a coffee shop we can include some images of you enjoying some lattes. Think of this as an opportunity to tell your own personal love story and we’re there to document it. If you don’t’ have any ideas, no worries we can take you to the perfect spots!

 When is the best time?

Our session usually last for two hours and we schedule the start of the session two hours before sunset, so we have a good mix of light.

Time of year is also something to consider. All of the seasons in New England make great backdrops; Winter snow, Fall foliage, Spring Daffodils and anywhere and everywhere during summer!

 What will we do?

Enjoy. Be playful. Flirt (remember how to do that?). Hold hands. Whisper funny things to each other. We want you to be yourselves. The best engagement photos are the ones that show a couple’s personalities. We want your friends and families to look at the pictures and say “that’s them”.

 What do we bring?

First, bring a fun attitude. Beyond that, bring things that might contribute like props. Signs, pets, the Harley, picnic basket, a bunch of flowers, anything that might add to the pictures.

Why Should We Do An Engagement Session?

We hear it a lot. Some people say they aren’t interested in engagement photos.  Others say they don’t want to do a session because they don’t photograph well, don’t have the time, already have pictures or a friend did them. Stop. Think about this. We feel you are missing out by not doing a session. We think it’s important to get to know each other. We get to know who you are as couple and how you interact with each other. You on the other hand, have a chance to discover what it’s like to work with us, see how awesome you look in the pictures and it gives you a feel for what to expect on your wedding day. Lots of couples that were opposed to the idea have expressed that they were glad they did it.couple on Harley Davidson in back alley at engagement photo sessioncouple sitting on bench at engagement photo session in B&Wcouple walking down Lover's Lane during engagement photo session in b&wcouple hugging in a red canoe during engagement photo sessioncouple kissing in front of lighthouse at engagement photo session on Martha's Vineyard
